The Balance Arts Center’s Performing Artist Teacher Training provides a one-of-a-kind training experience where you can develop your artistry while becoming a fully certified Alexander Technique Teacher.

Master your instrument and unlock your artistry so that you can create the art you have always imagined.

Directed by Ann Rodiger, the Balance Arts Center has become internationally renowned for a unique approach to the Alexander Technique and its application directly to the performing arts.

In your 3 years of study you will:   

  • Receive eligibility for certification as an Alexander Technique teacher from AmSAT

  • Receive a Balance Arts Performing Artist Certificate

    • Perform in both formal and informal settings

  • Receive a Balance Arts Performing Arts Teaching Certificate

    • Learn to coach performers in various disciplines utilizing the AT Principles

    • Complete a course in pedagogy

Schedule

In addition to our flagship daily Teacher Training class, each student will attend the Friday Performance Practices class. Students are also invited to participate in the Trainee Showcases and the BAC Showcases throughout the year.  Each student may sign up for private lessons directly applying the AT to their art form.  This is recommended at least once a month. There will be opportunities to collaborate with others in other arts forms. All styles and disciplines are welcome.

  • Fall Semester 2024: Monday, September 9th - Wednesday, December 18th

  • Spring Semester 2025: Tuesday, January 13th - Friday, June 14th

  • Students attend 4 Alexander Technique Teacher Training Classes Monday - Saturday. Students can make their own schedule from the schedule above.

  • Students participate in group classes focusing on Integration, Process, Pedagogy, and Performance Practice, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday afternoons.

  • Students have the opportunity to take Private Sessions with the BAC Faculty.

  • Students participate in Trainee Workshop/Showcase and perform 1-3 times a year in the BAC Showcase.

Areas of Study Include:

  • Trainee’s own use in everyday life and in art form

  • Hands-on work in Alexander Technique lessons and lessons in art form

  • Movement observation and analysis in everyday life and in art form

  • Survey and discussion of Alexander’s writings and literature related to Alexander Technique 

  • Survey and discussion of pedagogy and style related to art form

  • Communication skills

  • Teaching and artist entrepreneurship

  • Basic anatomy and kinesiology

  • Developmental movement

  • Sensory awareness

  • Vocal production for everyday life, teaching, and your art form

  • Presence and authenticity in performance

  • Technique and style for solo and group performances

  • Technique and skills for private lesson teaching and large group classes

  • Fundamental elements of your art form followed through to performance level skill

Training Course Faculty

The BAC Training Programs are directed and taught by Ann Rodiger and assisted by BAC Faculty.

How to Apply

Application Deadlines:

  • Scholarship Applications are due by 5pm ET on June 1st, 2025.

  • Applications are due by 5pm ET on August 15th, 2025.

  • $50 application fee.

Pre-Requisites & Application Materials:

  • Students must be 18 years of age or older by the start date of your first semester.

  • Student must take 5 Alexander Technique private lessons in person or virtually with BAC Faculty prior to joining the program.

  • Work Sample: Please send a video of your work or a recent performance to info@balanceartscenter.com to accompany your application.

  • 2 Letters of recommendation: Have recommenders send letters to info@balanceartscenter.com.

  • Upon review of your application and supplemental materials you will have an interview with Training Course Director, Ann Rodiger.

Scholarships for Tuition Assistance

  • Performing Artist Tuition Assistance Scholarships are available each year.

  • Scholarship applications are due annually on May 1st.

  • In addition to the Scholarship Application you must also complete the Performing Artist Teacher Training Application above.

  • The tuition assistance that a scholarship provides is applicable for 1 year. To be considered again, scholarship recipients will need to reapply each year.

Tuition & Fees

Performing Artist Teacher Training Program tuition is $19,500 per year.  There is a non-refundable $1000 enrollment fee due prior to each semester.
