Frequently Asked Questions:
What is the Alexander Technique?
Alexander Technique at the Balance Arts Center guides you toward finding a better balance and dynamic posture that you will learn to apply to all of your activities. Students learn how to approach both simple and complex movements by increasing awareness of the inherent poise of the body, letting go of habits that get in the way of easeful movement, and integrating the whole body into activity. With both verbal and gentle hands-on guidance, students learn how to release tension and disadvantageous thought patterns, resulting in an experience of greater freedom and coordination.
Do you recommend any previous experience before getting started?
No experience is necessary before starting your study of the Alexander Technique at the Balance Arts Center. Students are welcome to bring their interests and specific things they’d like to explore and improve to their lessons. We invite you to come with curiosity and open-mindedness as you begin this process of learning and change.
How many lessons should I take?
Though a lot can be gained in just a few lessons as one gets started, we’ve found that regular lessons allow students to really start to shift their habits and experience noticeable changes. The AT is a practice that deepens with time, new insights and changes will emerge as your awareness grows over time. Schedule your first lesson today.
If I’m recovering from an injury or am currently in pain can the Alexander Technique help me?
Absolutely! Whether you are in pain or recovering from injury, this process can help you form healthier patterns to take pressure off sensitive or painful areas. While it may take some time to become pain-free, we can start to address your injury or symptoms immediately.
How is this different from other movement modalities?
The AT has a unique approach of looking at how your whole body and thought process are related to your experiences. In this holistic way, we work with “the how” of your movement patterns and teach a process you participate in and take away with you. The AT differs from other modalities in that we encourage self-agency so that students can continue growing and changing on their own.
